Have you got a an ebook idea buzzing around in your brain?  If so, then you might as well get started now, because that ebook needs to be written… but if you have no idea, then you will want to start by picking a good niche.

Picking a niche is a twofold process.  First, you need to pick a topic which you  can write well about.  It should be interesting to you, either because you have experience in that area, or because it is something you want to try for yourself.

If you don’t know what niches are available, you can go to ClickBank.com and check out their Marketplace.

ClickBank is one of the largest affiliate platforms (i.e. places where people put their ebooks up for sale).

In the ClickBank Marketplace  you will see a list of Categories, and when you click on a Category, you will see sub-categories.

Pick out the ones which you can relate to.

It is good to pick niches which you are personally interested in because:
- it will be easier for you to create good content
- you will understand the topic from a buyer’s point of view

Once you have a list of niches which you are interested in, you’ll need to find which ones are profitable.

There is a tool which will tell you how much interest there is in a particular topic.  It is called the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

This tool will help you to see if there is much demand, or much competition, for your niche.

For example, if you were thinking of writing about natural cat flea control, you could do a search on that phrase, and see how much competition you would have, and how many monthly global searches there are for that keyword.  You would also see other related keywords.

I suggest you read Profitable Keyword Research for simple step by step instructions.  This is a free bonus for my readers.

There are also 2 other Google tools which will help your research.  They are Google Insights for Search, and the Google Wonder Wheel. You can find out more about them in my post 3 Free Tools for Niche Keyword Research.
